Medical facility

At Footsteps we are very excited about our next project which will really benefit the local community: our plan is to help the community build a medical facility.

The area is blighted by the diseases that affect vast quantities of Africa such as malaria and HIV/AIDS. In addition complications during child birth caused many unnecessary fatalities. The nearest health facilities are 20 minutes away on the main road in a bus. Getting to the main road is another matter.

We are working on a phased project that will initially provide facilities for in-patients, followed by a female ward and then a male ward. Apart from the building work itself, we are looking to cover the costs of the equipment costs. All staffing costs and operating costs will be covered by the community itself with the support and backing of the local government.

Proposed medical facility

Nursery block

Ironically, one of the only structures that remained unscathed when the cyclone hit was the building that was probably in the worst condition to start with; the nursery block.

The current building is made in the traditional way with adobe walls and floors, plus a corrugated iron sheet roof. Our intention is to bring this building up to the same standards as the other buildings.

Rebuiling Magunga Primary School

The rest of the school is not yet completely finished either - the admin block is in the process of reconstruction and class 1 also needs to be built.
