Rafiki 2013

The Rafiki volunteer trip to Kenya this year was a wonderful experience for the volunteers and the schools.  After taking a break last year to watch the London Olympics and avoid the Kenyan elections we were ready to head back to Kenya with 23 plucky volunteers.

Quiz night raises another £4500 for Kenyan schools

Thank you to everyone who supported our Quiz night last Friday 26th April. It was a fun evening and we were able to raise over £4500. Very special thanks go to Andrea Young and her team who organised the Quiz itself, to the intrepid Kevin Sharpe for his incomparable comparing and to Rokeby School for letting us use the premises for the evening.

Over £10,000 raised at The Funding Network

On the 22nd of April, Footsteps had the opportunity to present the project for the girl's dormitory at Magunga Secondary School to The Funding Network.

The result was a great total of £10,387.

Fundraising dinner raises £18,000

In spite of the dreary weather on St Patrick’s Day, 80 people turned out for a fantastic dinner held at the Light House Restaurant, Wimbledon.

Following a welcoming glass of Prosecco, Suzanne spoke movingly about the charity, after which the audience were treated to a couple of songs, accompanied by guitar and ukulele, from Hebe Bourne and Lucy Fox.

Rae Primary School phase 1

March 2013

Phase 1 of construction has been completed at Rae Primary School with 4 newly completed classrooms ready for use.

The foundations, walls and roofs were funded with money from local government and we have partnered with them to complete the buildings with floors, plastering, painting, etc, etc.

We were very happy to see them having their final touches applied as we left our field visit in March 2013.

Two more classrooms have been constructed to half way up the walls. Phase 2 will be to finish them off.

Brian gets a lucky break

When Suzanne and Tony visited Kenya in March 2013 they dropped in to Kobeto Primary School which is about to be the site of our latest building project once the dormitory is complete at Magunga Secondary School. We wanted to inform the Headmistress about when she could expect to have us on site. We were also interested to hear about progress at the school and the recent academic performance.

151 desks for Christmas

The results are in from our Christmas desk campaign and we're very pleased to say that up until the end of December 2012 we were able to purchase 151 desks for 2 of our schools.

Rae Primary School received 100 desks and Obingo received 51.

We're even happier to say that the campaign has been going on since and seems to be turning into an Easter campaign as well.  We have money for an extra 53 desks.

Eco-friendly dormitory under construction

Work has started at Magunga Secondary School where we are about to build a dormitory for the Secondary School girls in their final year.

So far we have funding in place for half the project we'd like to build which is a facility for 50 girls to board including an ablution block.  So we're starting with the foundations and the walls.

Two more classrooms for Obingo

January 2013

Obingo Primary received two more completed classrooms courtesy of Footsteps.  The school had managed to get hold of money to put a foundation, walls and a roof, but the classroom wasn't a good place for education with no floors, doors or windows.
